Concept and Definitions of Human Resource Management

Human Resource Management (HRM) is a strategic approach aimed at effectively management of people in an organization so that they help organization to gain a competitive advantage. Human resource management is a process in which the human are selected, trained, motivated and maintained so that they give their maximum to organization.


Human Resource is the most important asset of an organization. It is directly concern with the “people” in the organization.This process initially start with the selection of  right human or staff for the organization, train and develop them by conducting various training programmes ,seminars etc, motivation of human by giving them rewards and at last provide them best working conditions within the organization which helps human to provide value to the organization which couldn’t provided by the other resources. For example – If a person in an organization is a creative person and provides innovative ideas he will be given a role where he could utilize his skills, so in HRM if the human are managed effectively they give value to the organization.

The activities related to HRM is effectively controlled by HR department which is designed to maximize employees employees. They mainly focus on management of people within organization, focusing on policies and systems.

HR practitioners structure staffing programs to recruit and retain the best employees by making the company competitive in terms of attractiveness of potential candidate, so that they provide value to the organization and remain working for the organization.


According to Edwin B. Flippo, “HRM is planning, organizing, directing, controlling of procurement, development, compensation, integration, maintenance and separation of human resource to the end that individual, organizational and social objectives are achieved.”

According to Buchanan and Huczynski, “HRM is a managerial prospective, which argues the need to establish an integrated series of personnel policies to support organizational strategy.”

According to Bratton and Gold, “HRM is a strategic approach to managing employment relations, which emphasizes that leveraging peoples capabilities are critical to achieving competitive advantage, this being achieved through a distinctive set of integrated employment policies, programmes and practices.”

According to Storey, “HRM is a distinctive approach to employment management, which seeks to achieve competitive advantage through the strategic deployment of a highly committed and capable workforce, using an array of cultural, structural and personnel techniques.”

So, Human Resource Management is a process in which people are effectively managed in organization which helps to bring people and organization together so that they give value to the organization which helps in achievement of organizational goals.
